Barbara Maria Bischof was the youngest of seven children born on October 1st, 1969. Since she was the baby, she naturally obtained a special status, being loved and spoiled by her large family.
Her career choice became already obvious during her childhood years. One of her favorite toys was a small safe, in which she would store her treasures. When opening the safe, she would always turn toward a corner and not share the lock combination with anyone, which she would change regularly.
She started school at the age of seven. She was a student at the Volks and Hauptschule in Feldkirchen and later at the Frauenberufsschule in Klagenfurt. School seemed like a breeze to her. She was a great student, diligent and very exact in everything she did.
After receiving her diploma in 1989, she applied for a job at the local Sparkasse/Savingsbank and started her career there. Due to her friendly and happy personality, she fit right in and did very well.
She developed a great relationship with her coworkers and friendships were formed, many lasting over two decades and surviving the long distance.
In 1992 Barbara met her soon to be husband, Bernie Bischof. Bernie was visiting his friend & X- Manager of the Old World Restaurant, Christian Cusner in Corinthian Austria. They attended a bar and Christian invited one of his colleagues which happened to be Barbara & here is when she met her soulmate. At this time Barbara was 23 years old. When Bernie laid eyes on her he immediately felt a connection. Fast forward a few years and Barbara wrote Bernie a birthday card. Bernie was in Germany in November and contacted her and told her that he would like to see her when he gets to Austria. They met in Austria and started their relationship. Bernie invited her to visit him in the USA and she took him up on his invitation and they went to Las Vegas & San Francisco, Santa Barbara and on this trip they fell in love in December of 1996.
After only two weeks visiting, Bernie told his mother, father, sister, and friends that he believes Barbara was the one he wanted to spend the rest of his life with and he asked his sister Cyndie to help him pick out an engagement ring. He found the perfect ring and made reservations at Orange Hill restaurant in the city of Orange California the night before she was to leave back to her homeland of Austria. She was 27 and he 37. Being that Bernie was a single bachelor for 37 years nobody believed he would ever settle down so when his sister called everybody in his telephone book to come and attend an engagement party that night, literally 100 people filled the Old World Lounge and Bar up with everyone excited to meet his new fiancé. Bernie's sister Cyndie asked Bernie what happens if she invites all these people over for an engagement party if she declines his proposal and Bernie simply replied that she is going to say YES!! and of course that night he proposed to his soulmate Barbara and she was ecstatic and said yes in an instant.
Barbara had no idea that while they were out for dinner her future sister-in-law literally called everyone her family knew and most everybody showed up within hours to come and meet the new fiancé. In comes Bernie and Barbara and they were both shocked as to how many people actually came. It was a great party and everyone adored Barbara even though they had only just met her.
The next morning she flew back to her homeland and Bernie booked his flight soon after to properly meet her family and ask for her lovely hand in marriage. When Bernie arrived in Munich Germany Barbara's Brother Peter and Brother-in-Law Robert picked him up from the airport and drove him to their hometown in Klagenfurt. They asked all sorts of questions to get to know this new American lad who has asked their sisters hand in marriage and when they got to her hometown Bernie met Barbara's parents Gottfried and Waltraud. Her mother Waltraud offered Bernie some hot tea now after a couple cups of hot tea Bernie kept eyeballing a bottle of homemade schnapps and told her eldest sister Maria that he would rather have a shot of the schnapps. Barbara's family was happy that he liked their homemade schnapps. After being asked many questions Bernie looked to the family and asked if there was anything else that they wanted to ask. The family laughed and was shocked that Bernie would straight up ask them if they had any more questions. Everyone in that room knew that this would be the perfect pair. Her papa granted his baby daughter's hand in marriage.
Few months later in the month of May 1997 Barbara Doerfler became a Bischof. Bernie's family and friends flew to Austria and witnessed the most fairytale like wedding imaginable.
They married in a church which was built many hundreds of years ago and had the reception in a castle with live deer coming up to the glass doors surrounded by forest and tranquility. Barbara was a gorgeous bride her smile radiated the entire room she had found her soulmate and together they became one.
Barbara came to live in the USA and her life would forever be changed. She came from a quiet small farming town to a bustling beach town in a German village called the Old World. Need I say more? It was quite overwhelming in the beginning but she quickly adapted and stepped right in and was the best wife any man could ask for.
One year later she gave birth to their first born son Markus Josef Bischof on July 25, 1998. What a joy, a healthy, happy, baby boy. Three years later in 2001, November 16 she gave birth to her second son, Matthaeus Gottfried Bischof. Another healthy, happy baby boy born into this loving family. Together the four of them lived a good life. Barbara dedicated her life to her three boys she cooked, cleaned, worked, and got her boys to and from school, soccer practice, Tai Kwon Do and more. She did all the bookkeeping & banking at the Old World and was happy to spend time with her family and enjoyed traveling back to her homeland each year.
In 2013 she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was strong, young and otherwise healthy and she fought the fight for four long years. Most people didn't even know she was sick. She remained strong and made sure to exercise and eat healthy and never complained about being sick. She was determined to be cancer free. Our dear Lord decided it was time for her to come home and finally be cancer free. Surrounded by her family and over 80 friends to say their goodbyes to the princess of Old World and the sweet, humble farmers daughter of Feldkirchen she left us here on earth to start her eternal life in heaven alongside her father Gottfried, her eldest sister Maria, her grandparents and her mother-in-law Dolores Rose Bischof. Together they all now soar with the Angels and we all will one day see each other again.
Her final wishes were to make sure that her boys were being taken care of, all three of them and for her sons to graduate and follow their dreams and to be happy. She was fearless and at the very end of her life she said she wasn't scared to die but she was worried about her men.
Barbara Maria Bischof passed away on Saturday, April 29, 2017 surrounded by family and friends. Her legacy will live on and she will never be forgotten.
Barbara was a mother, wife, daughter, sister, aunt and friend. Rest in peace our beautiful Barbara.
